2010 Victorian Clubs Team Time Trial Championships results held at Ballarat July 18th

The Women 15 team with medals

Ten Wangaratta Cycling Club junior members successfully competed at the Victorian Club Team Time Trial Championships on Sunday held at Miner’s Rest near Ballarat.

The event offered a change from the regular individual racing with the team’s starting at intervals & racing against the clock to see which team had the fastest time for their category. Teams are made up of club members with the girl’s teams allowed 3 riders & the boy’s teams 4 riders.

In true Ballarat style, conditions for the event were cold & windy, however fortunately the forecast rain held off.

All teams raced on the same 23km course starting & finishing at the Ballarat Racecourse. The first Wangaratta team to get underway was the Women 15 team of Nicci Clark, Emma & Kate Brown. They had caught & passed the two other teams before the halfway mark & went on to record a time of 47 minutes & nine seconds to win the gold.

Starting four minutes behind the girl’s, the Men 15 team of Fergus Samon, Seamus Lane, Tomarsh Loki & Thomas McDonald made good time to pass the team in front & also catch the girls just before the last corner to record a time of 42 minutes & 47 seconds & finish in 5th place. With three of the boys still able to race in the men 15 category next year, they should be strong contenders.

The last of the Wangaratta teams to start was the Women 17 team of Jacinta Findlay, Melanie Clark with Rebecca Thompson moving up an age group to fill the team. The girls were thrilled to finish in second place with a time of 46 minutes & 31 seconds.

There will be plenty of action for the rides this week, with the club hosting the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships on Tuesday & the Victorian State Individual Time Trial & Road Race Championships on the weekend.

The Women 17 with medals

A huge thanks must go out to Dave Wohlers for helping out with the girls’ training & Frank Loki for helping out the boys

 2010 Eildon Junior Tour - July 10th & 11th

Thomas McDonald was Wangaratta Cycling Club's most outstanding rider at the Eildon Junior Tour on the weekend. Over 150 junior cyclists in age groups from under 13s to under 19s competed in the three stage tour with an individual time trial & two road races.

In windy conditions on Saturday morning, riders competed in the time trial - under 13s 4.4km & all other grades covering 12.4km. James Boal in the men 19 category completed the course in a time of 17:58 to finish in third place while Nicci Clark put in a strong effort in the Women 15 to finish in fourth place with a time of 25:11. Thomas McDonald outshone the entire Boys 13 category to finish in first place with a time of 9:06.

In the afternoon rain set in at the start of the Men 19 road race which was 118km, including 2 laps of the 'skyline loop'. In the windy & wet conditions the race split apart with riders coming in solo & only 10 riders managing to complete the distance. All of the races over the 'skyline loop' were split apart due to the tough conditions. The women 15 race was 25km out & back from Thornton to Taggerty. A busy road to race on, with all three club members riding well in the conditions to finish within four minutes of the winner. Riding a shorter distance of the same course, Thomas McDonald finished in third place in the boys 13 category.

Sunday morning saw the third stage of the tour with all races finishing on top of the dam wall at Eildon. The Women 15 were the first to get under way with a 27km course loop Eildon to Thornton & back to Eildon. Emma Brown was the best of the Wangaratta riders to finish in 5th place. The Boys 13 & Girls 13 races were the same distance with Thomas McDonald finishing in 2nd place in his race and Emily White 5th in hers. The Men 15 & Women 17 raced over the 'Skyline loop' over a 48km course with Tomarsh Loki & Jess White both representing the club. The Men 19 &Men 17 raced the 'skyline loop' coupled with other variations around the Thornton Taggerty area to take their respective race distances to 93km & 68km.

In the overall classification Thomas McDonald finished in first place in the Boys 13. Emily White, in her first year in the girls 13 age group, finished 5thoverall. In the Women 15 category Nicci Clark finished in 6th place, Emma Brown 7th & Kate Brown 8th place. Tomarsh Loki rode well in the Men 15 A Grade to finish 15th, Jess White was 7th in the Women 17, James Fox finished 11th overall in the Men 17 B Grade. James Boal continued on his strong season to date and finished in third place overall in the Men 19 with Alex Meyland 5th & Mark White 15th .

This weekend the club will be focussing on the Victorian Club Teams Championships with the club entering three teams in the junior categories. The teams - a Women 15, Women 17 & Men 15 team will race against the clock on a 23km course against teams from across the state.

Next Tuesday the club is hosting the Border final of the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships, with cyclists from schools throughout the Border & North East eligible to enter in either the racing or novice category with this year's state final being held in conjunction with the World Road Racing Championships which Australia is hosting in Geelong in September.

WANGARATTA CYCLING CLUB TOUR 2010

JUNE 5TH & 6TH

One hundred cyclists aged from 9 to masters raced in the weekend's 'Wangaratta Cycling Club Tour'.

The tour consisted of four stages for each of the 9 categories.

In foggy conditions, 5 of the categories started their tour with a 'kermesse' around the 'Reith estate' block with three of the junior grades racing a criterium circuit at the saleyards.

Stage two was the hill climb with the juniors heading straight up Taminick Gap to the finish with the younger junior riders finishing before the big climb, whilst the seniors raced first to Glenrowan before ascending Taminick Gap.

With sunny conditions on Sunday morning the wind came up for riders to face. The juniors commenced the racing with the M15 boys followed by the E grade seniors & A grade juniors racing from the saleyards to complete the Glenrowan-Taminick loop. B Grade juniors raced to the 'Big Cherry' & return & the C Grade juniors raced to the cross roads & return. The 3 junior graded races had the added challenge of having a hill finish on the top side of Shanley Street finishing on Omaru Road. The remaining 4 grades of seniors raced the Ryans-Taminick Gap loop of 55km.

The final stage of the tour was an individual time trial, racing against the clock. The graded juniors raced either a 4km or 10km course, whilst all other grades raced 12 to 20km.

With riders competing from across the north east as well as from Bendigo & Melbourne, racing was fierce & competitive.

In the Junior grades Emily White was the winner in C Grade finishing 1st in three of the four events. Nicole Clark was the winner in B Grade also winning 3 of her events & Kate Boyd won three of her events to win the A Grade Division.

A new category was added this year as a separate Under 15 boys division, giving riders a chance to race on the state course prior to the state championships. With additional prize money sponsored by the 'Best Car Wash', twelve junior boys entered the category with Jay Castles from Shepparton the overall winner, with Angus Flood from Shepparton awarded the best young rider as the highest placed first year rider. Amongst the locals, Tomarsh Loki finished 4th, Seamus Lane, 10th, Lachlan Seymour 11th & Fergus Samon 12th.

In the senior divisions the winner of A Grade was VIS rider & member of Carnegie Caulfield, Alex Morgan with locals Tully Lyster & James Boal in second & third.

In B Grade Ian Boyd from Shepparton dominated the overall to win outright with young Wangaratta rider Mark White in second & Stephen Field 3rd.

Mitchell Barry was the overall winner in C Grade with local Laurie Lyster in second & Michael Gough third.

The D Grade Division was won by Albury-Wodonga's Declan Gregory with Adam Maccanti second & Bendigo's Antonia Abbisogni in third.

After winning the 'Ian Bullis' memorial race last month, Mather Grealy continued on his winning streak in winning the overall E Grade division from Lisa Barry & Dad Bernie Grealy.

This year was the largest tour the club has hosted with events running smoothly. Senior events within the club go into recess until the spring season whilst junior events step up with the Shepparton Junior Tour next weekend & building up to the State Junior Time Trial & Road Race Championships being hosted by Wangaratta on the weekend of the 24th & 25th of July.

COUNTRY ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

MAY 30TH - NEWSTEAD

Wangaratta was well represented when ten of the club's cyclists travelled to Newstead on Sunday for the Country Road Race Championships hosted by the Castlemaine Cycling Club.

Whilst their Metropolitan counterparts had rain for their championships on Saturday, the country competitors had dry conditions but had to contend with a fierce wind which played havoc with many especially the smaller competitors.

Thomas McDonald and James Boal were the big winners when they both won their events and came home with a gold medal each.

Thomas was the number 1 ranked rider in the under 13 boys 14km race and proved his ranking when he won a tight sprint for the line ahead of Isaac Buckell from Bendigo & Nicholas Simpson from Castlemaine. Thomas is continuing to show good form this season after he rode strongly in the Ararat Junior Tour with a third place in the individual time trial & finishing 7th overall for the tour.

James like Thomas won in a sprint finish just ahead of Sam Crome from Bendigo & Oliver Kent-Spark from Geelong. The under 19 Men's 3 lap event saw several attacks throughout the race however none were able to stay away and it came down to a 4 rider bunch sprint in the end. Boal was too strong for the others and picked up his first win at an open event.

In the Women 15 race, Wangaratta was represented by 3 girls with Kate & Emma Brown and Nicci Clark all finding it rough going in the trying conditions. The Gold medal was won by Kate Boyd from Shepparton, a regular competitor at Wangaratta club racing. The Wangaratta trio came in home in 4th, 5th and 6th places.

The conditions also proved tough for Jessica White in the Women 17 race, but she showed determination finishing 6th.

Tomarsh Loki competed well in the Men 15 category, finishing in 7th place in a strong field of 18 competitors.

James Fox competing in only his second season rode strongly in the under 17 Men's race and is steadily improving each time he competes. Several of the top riders pulled out of the two lap event while James finished in 11th place.

Both Matt Clark and Mark White found the going a bit tough with both pulling out half way through each of their events.

This weekend the Wangaratta Club is holding their annual club tour. Competitors are travelling from across the North East & also Melbourne, Ballarat & Bendigo for the event. There will be four senior grades with riders competing in a Kermesse around the 'Reith Estate' block, a hill climb up Taminick Gap, a road race around the 'Ryans & Taminick Gap' loop & an individual time trial. There will also be  3 junior grades competing in a criterium, hill climb, road race & time trial.

May 8th, RACE 3 - Junior Aggregate

It was good to see a majority of the juniors participate in the Development Day held by Cyclesport Victoria. Cam McFarlane kept the juniors busy with activities, information & stories.

Junior racing for the day was an individual time trial over the state courses - 8km & 10km.

Not everyone is a good time trialer, but it can even the field & lets riders know where they fit overall.

Our one under 11 rider - Sammy Thompson rode the under 13 course.

TEAM TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sorry to tell you again about this event, but we need to finalise what teams we are able to send & whether we are able to car pool/organise a bus etc. If riders want to be involved let us know & we will see how you can get there.

Being involved means an overnight stay in Ballarat. In the past some of us have stayed at the Goldfields Caravan Park & shared meal & had a good time.

Details of team requirements have not been posted yet, so the team requirements & distances are from last year.

Age groups-

J11/13 ride a 6km block. Minimum 3 riders, max 3, time recorded on 2nd rider to cross the line

W15/M15 ride a 15km undulating circuit. Minimum 3 riders, max 4, time recorded on the 3rd rider to cross the line.

W17/M17 ride a 32km undulating course. Minimum 3 riders, max 4, time recorded on the 3rd rider to cross the line.

Team time trialling is a bit different to normal racing & the team need to bond & work together.

Please email Anne during this week if you are interested & available on the 17th/18th of July - the weekend before states & a week after the Eildon junior tour.

Teams need to start training together & we also need a few parents/coaches who are willing to assist with this.

Racing next week-

2010 - MAY 15TH - WEEK 4

A GRADE - LAP OF TAMINICK - SEALED HANDICAP & SCRATCH RACE

THE FINISH WILL BE IN OMARU ROAD ON THE TOP SIDE OF SHANLEY STREET

Riders start together to race the course. A sealed handicap means that the first rider who crosses the line may have fastest time, but with a handicap included, may not be the winner. If you know where you are compared to other riders, you know how hard you have to ride. For example- if you are the slowest rider in the group usually, your aim is to stay with other riders or finish in front of them. If you know you are usually faster than some of the riders, you have to try to get away from them.

Your race will start straight after all of the senior grades have left.

Please note- You may pass B Grade riders during your event, please pass safely & some encouragement would be appreciated.

B GRADE - WILL ALSO BE A LAP OF THE TAMINICK IN STAGES.

FINAL FINSH WILL BE IN OMARU ROAD ON THE TOP SIDE OF SHANLEY STREET.

Stage 1 - B Grade will leave the saleyards at 1.35pm, riding together as a group to Glenrowan. The group must leave promptly to avoid clashing with the seniors. Racing will start at the Boweya Road turn-off racing to the top of Taminick. Anyone who then wants to ride back & support the others is welcome to do so. The aim is for all riders to make it to the top or as far as they can.

Be aware that you may be passed by A Grade juniors on your ascent of Taminick Gap & seniors before we get to Glenrowan which is why we need to start early.

Stage 2 - Ride carefully down Taminick Gap & regroup at the crossroads. Racing will then begin again, racing to the finish in Omaru Road

Points for climbing Taminick (extra point for those who achieve this for the first time), Points for stage 2

C GRADE - RACE TO THE CROSSROADS & RETURN VIA REITH ESTATE

FINISH WILL BE IN OMARU ROAD ON THE TOP SIDE OF SHANLEY STREET

Your race will leave the saleyards after the A Grade Juniors. You will turn right into Reith Road & then left into Colson Drive & left into Warby Range Road. This will give you a bit of the state course. This is your first race out on the road this season. You will stay together until you turn around at the crossroads, then the race will be on!

GOOD LUCK TO THE JUNIORS WHO ARE RACING IN ARARAT NEXT WEEK

2010-May 1st Junior Race Report

With some of the juniors & families electing to race the senior course, today's planned race of a 2 lap handicap around the 'Big Block' was voted out & all of A & B grades raced a lap of the Taminick loop- the Men 15 state course & a bit further than the women 15 course. With such a diverse level of abilities in the group it became a sealed handicap. With some of the riders never having done the course before, the handicaps went from scratch to 30 minutes. Riders should be commended on how well they rode & thanks to Melanie for escorting younger sister Nicci on her first time around the course.

The three girls are demonstrating good riding skills & need to get out on the road in preparation for open events.

Next week Cyclesport Victoria is holding a development day aimed from novice riders up to riders in their 2nd year of racing. However, I'm sure you would all be welcome to come & learn something. The cost of the day is $40 & you need to let Ashley Coote at Cyclesport Victoria know that you intend to participate.

We will be having a barbecue as well in preparation for the time trial which is Saturday's racing. With the riders we currently have we will race over the under 13 & 15 courses - 8km & 10km. We will start & finish on Shanley St. Time trials will need to get underway as soon as the seniors depart for their race, so we are all finished by the time they return.

If anyone still has any energy left afterwards, we would like to get our team time trial teams organised & perhaps put them into some training & organise some training times. Any parents who would like to support & assist with training, need to also put their hands up.

Parents & riders - please think about whether you are prepared to participate in the teams event. It means travelling to Ballarat for one race on Sunday July 25th. Unless you are prepared to get up & travel very early on the Sunday, it means staying overnight in Ballarat. In the last few years we have stayed at the Goldfields Caravan Park & had a great time.

Working as a team is good for the kids & makes them think differently than in a normal race, creates bonding etc. It is not just about winning, but working together & supporting each other.

WANGARATTA JUNIOR ROAD SEASON APRIL 10TH 2010

Eighteen junior cyclists fronted up for the grading day on Saturday with threatening rain holding off for the junior events.

Cyclists contested a time trial & hill climb sprint to grade them for the upcoming aggregate point score series.

The time trial was started & finished along Warby Range Road. The under 11 riders rode a 4.5km course assisted by some of the older juniors. For the under 13s & older it was 9km around the 'big block' - riding along Warby Range Road to Shanley St, down Shanley St to Reith Road, along Reith Road to Lindner Road, then back to Warby Range Road for the finish.

With all time trials completed the group rode around the corner into the top side of Shanley St for sprint races finishing on top of the hill in Omaru Road. The group of 18 was split into 4 evenly matched groups to race.

There will be no junior racing next week, with many families involved in the Alpe d' Buffalo Junior Mountain Climbing Championships in Porepunkah. The next junior club race will be on April 24th when the older juniors climb Taminick Gap. Club racing will then be held weekly with new riders welcome to come along.

The club will be holding a come & try day on May 8th with coaches from Cyclesport Victoria in attendance conducting skills sessions for new riders. For more details contact club president Dean McDonald info@ozmist.com.au .

Senior racing next week will be held in Eldorado.

WANGARATTA JUNIOR ROAD SEASON 2010

Our aim is to develop a strong junior base & have riders entering open events. We aim for the kids to enjoy their cycling & feel part of the club no matter what their ability.

Grades A/B/C $5-00 per week, Novices $2-00 per week. - Graded riders are those who race on the road, novice riders are those who stay within the saleyards complex to do skills & a short race.

All participants are required to be current 2010 licence holders. Licences are available from the club. J15 & J17 licences are $110, J11 & J13 (born 1998 or later) may either purchase a club only kidz licence for $10 or a full racing licence for $70.

Bike Hire: The club has available several bikes which may be hired for the season at a cost of $5 per week. The bikes will be kept at the clubrooms & are available for racing each week as well as a training day during the week.

Winner of each grade (A/B/C) per week will receive a McDonald's voucher. All riders including novices will receive a drink & chocolate at the end of race presentation. Race winners will receive an award each week.

Riders will be awarded points for racing each week towards an aggregate. Final points system will be determined after grading day. One point for entering, one point for finishing, points for placegetters & two points for competing in opens.

Parents/Guardians are needed to assist with marshalling each week; we may plan a weekly roster if we are not getting enough support to provide a safe environment to race the program as scheduled.

All riders need to bring along appropriate equipment -bike in good order, drink, jacket, gloves, helmet, etc.

Cyclists & parents need to ensure that their bikes have correct gearing/rollout for their age group-

J11 & 13 - 5.5m, J15 - 6.0m, J17 - 6.5m. If you need assistance, just ask.

Regional/Club Championships

Age championships, trophy &/or medals for placegetters in each category - times for both Time Trial & Road Race are added together, & the cyclist with the lowest time will be the winner. Competitors need to have competed in at least 4 club or regional events throughout the season to be eligible to enter.

JUNIOR OPENS

Juniors & families are encouraged to enter open events this year:

STATE TEAM TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS BALLARAT - July 18th

It would be fantastic to see Wangaratta enter a few junior teams. In 2009 we entered 3 teams with the under 15 girls winning bronze. All had a great time with some staying overnight. Working as a team is great for the kids.

JUNIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - July 24th & 25th

Run by us & a must for all our juniors.

NATIONAL ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS -   September 3rd to 5th

Something our under 15s & 17s can aim for. The championships are held in Canberra at the Mt Stromlo Complex & consist of a time trial, road race & Criterium. Events can be entered separately.

ALL NOTE:

All cyclists need to be aware that racing is held on open roads & all road rules need to be abided by.

We are not a babysitting service & a parent or guardian needs to be involved. The more assistance we have, the safer it will be for all

Riders 10 & under need to have a support person riding with them on the road.

Kids get encouraged by marshals on corners & intersections & know there is assistance at hand if needed - provided we have enough people to help.

All events are subject to change depending on conditions & helpers in attendance.
